How we measure

Measure across the base, at the widest point. We round down on bracket boundaries.

1. Measure at the base

Put the tape across the base of the stump, where the root flare meets the soil. Not the top of the stump (that's usually narrower or chainsawed flat) and not chest-height. The base is where the cost lives.

2. Measure across the widest point

Most stumps are oblong. Find the widest axis and measure across it. We use the widest measurement, not the average.

3. On a bracket boundary, you get the lower bracket

Brackets are listed as 6 to 12 inches, 12 to 18 inches, and so on. If your stump measures exactly 12 inches, it bills as the 6-to-12 row, not the 12-to-18 row. We round down in your favor. If you're a fraction over, the next row up is the right one.

Tools

A tape measure across the top works fine. Soft tape, rigid tape, or even a stick marked off in inches. Don't bother with phone-AR measure tools — they aren't accurate enough at the root flare.

What if I'm off?

If you're close, we go with what you entered. A small overage rounded our way is normal. If a stump is meaningfully bigger on grind day than what was booked (a 24-inch stump entered as 12), we'll re-quote that line item before we start. No surprises.
