Surface Root Removal

Professional surface root grinding services across New Hampshire. Included with stump grinding or available for extensive root work.

What is Surface Root Grinding?

Surface root grinding involves using specialized equipment to grind down visible or near-surface tree roots that extend from the stump. When we perform stump grinding, we include grinding of major surface roots as part of our standard service.

Some situations require more extensive root work, such as when roots extend far from the stump area, are causing damage to structures or hardscaping, or when preparing an area for new construction or landscaping projects. In these cases, we offer additional root grinding services beyond what is included with standard stump grinding.

What is Included with Stump Grinding

Standard Root Grinding

Included at no additional cost with our stump grinding service:

  • Major surface roots in the immediate stump area
  • Roots within 3-4 feet of stump perimeter
  • Roots ground to same depth as stump (6-8 inches)
  • Sufficient for most lawn restoration needs

Extensive Root Work

Additional services available for more complex situations:

  • Roots extending beyond standard grinding area
  • Large surface roots throughout property
  • Roots causing structural or landscape damage
  • Site preparation requiring complete root clearing

When Extra Root Work is Needed

Structural Issues

Roots damaging foundations, driveways, sidewalks, or patios require removal beyond the immediate stump area to prevent ongoing problems.

Extensive Root Systems

Large trees like oaks and maples can have surface roots extending 20+ feet from the trunk, creating trip hazards or lawn maintenance difficulties.

Landscaping Projects

Installing new gardens, hardscaping, or underground features like irrigation systems may require clearing roots from specific areas.

Construction Preparation

Building projects, driveway expansions, or utility installations need thorough root clearing to ensure proper foundation and prevent future issues.

Our Root Grinding Process

1

Root Assessment

We evaluate the extent of the root system, identifying which roots need grinding based on your needs and the specific situation.

2

Systematic Grinding

Using our professional stump grinder, we systematically grind surface roots to 6-8 inches below grade, ensuring complete removal of visible and near-surface roots.

3

Area Cleanup

Wood chips are raked back into the hole, creating a mound that won't support plant growth. Optional blow chips into woods service available to clear chips for planting areas.

4

Site Restoration

Areas are leveled and prepared for your next steps, whether that is grass seed, landscaping, or construction.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is root grinding included with stump grinding?

Yes, our standard stump grinding service includes grinding major surface roots in the immediate stump area (typically 3-4 feet from the stump perimeter). Additional root work beyond this area is available for an extra charge.

How much does additional root grinding cost?

Pricing for extensive root work depends on the extent of the root system, diameter of the roots, and accessibility. Contact us with photos or a description of your situation for an accurate quote.

Can you grind roots without removing the stump?

Yes, we can grind surface roots separately if the stump has already been removed or if you only need specific roots addressed. This is common for trees removed long ago where roots remain problematic.

Will grinding roots kill the tree if it is still alive?

We only grind roots for trees that have already been cut down. If you have an existing tree with problematic surface roots, grinding major roots could severely damage or kill the tree. Consult an arborist for advice on managing roots of living trees.

How deep do you grind the roots?

We grind surface roots to the same depth as our stump grinding - typically 6-8 inches below grade. This is sufficient for lawn restoration and most landscaping needs. Deeper roots generally do not need grinding as they are below the surface.

What about roots under my driveway or patio?

Grinding cannot access roots underneath existing hardscaping. If roots under concrete or pavers are causing damage, the hardscape may need to be removed to access the roots. We can then grind the roots before you restore the surface.
